Relevant commitment to our planet

We founded Relevant with one promise:

“To develop gentle but effective everyday cosmetics products while taking care of our planet”

Everything we make has an impact on our planet.

Founding a business in 2020 comes with a huge responsibility. Especially in the cosmetics industry.

It's estimated that 120 billion units of cosmetics packaging are manufactured each year. And that only 9% is being recycled.

In other words: there lies a great challenge ahead. Not just for us, but for every company, government and consumer.

There's no planet B. And that's why it's so important that we take care of what we got. Not just for the sake of our generation, but also for the generations to come.

We're committed to do our part. That is why we promise all of you (and the planet) that we'll only develop the most relevant everyday cosmetics products.

Relevant change for our oceans

Every year, almost 10 million tonnes of plastics end up in our oceans. If we continue like this, it's estimated that there will be more plastic waste than fish in our oceans (by weight) in 2050. One of the most harmful sources of ocean plastic is fishing nets, as fishermen simply do not have any sustainable way of discarding them.

Luckily, one of our partners has set up an ecosystem that ensures the collection of fishing nets from local fisheries. In that way, they prevent more fishing nets entering our oceans or ending up in our landfills.

Knowing this and wanting to start a new sustainable skincare brand, we're committed to helping reverse this trend.

So, we spent 1 year developing our unique deodorant packaging in 100% recycled fishing nets. This has been a complex development process, as very few manufacturers in Europe have the capabilities to do so.

Fortunately, we found capable and open-minded partners who have helped us develop the world’s first ocean plastic deodorant packaging.

We're proud to have developed the world’s first ocean plastic deodorant. It was not an easy start to our Relevant journey, but indeed necessary. We have shown other brand owners that it's possible to use 100% recycled material in their packaging. Hopefully, this will encourage other brand owners to follow along and make a positive impact on our planet.

Relevant actions

To act on our promise of taking care of our planet, we focus on 5 key areas:

  • 1. Ingredients
  • 2. Circular packaging
  • 3. Distribution of products
  • 4. Local sourcing
  • 5. Giving back

All our ingredients have been carefully selected to ensure the effectiveness of our products while keeping them gentle on the skin.

Our product development philosophy is ‘less is more’. This means that we only use as few ingredients as possible, ensuring minimal waste in our products.

We've set up a framework for the selection of our ingredients:

  • Completely traceable - from extraction to final product
  • Sustainably sourced and manufactured under proper working conditions
  • Easily obtained in nature after use
  • No animal ingredients, animal by-products or animal testing
  • Free from bad chemicals causing allergenic impurities (non-perfume products*)

*All perfumes include chemicals that may cause an allergic reaction.

We believe that a product should only contain ingredients that have a proven effect on your body. Following this framework allows us to do just that

We strive to use as many natural ingredients as possible. However, to ensure the quality and preservation of the products we may need to add non-natural ingredients. Our goal is to develop products with a minimum of 95% natural ingredients. The Ocean Plastic Deodorant contains 100% natural ingredients.

Circular packaging is an important and necessary commitment. It means that we must ensure that our packaging can be recycled again after end-of-use.

In addition, we want to use as much recycled material in our product as possible. Recycled material, compared to virgin material, has significantly less CO2 emissions. To push this even further (only few brands have adopted yet), we need you (consumers) to demand more from brand owners. It is okay, the solutions are already here.

We've decided to pay a premium for our recycled ocean plastic material because it contributes greatly to our planet. Less profit, more planet.

Using both recycled material and making recyclable products, we reduce the amount of new material consumption while minimising waste.

Product packaging
We made the bottle and cap in 100% recycled ocean plastic. Actually, as the first in the world. We believe this is a planet friendly approach.

Ideally, we would only use one type of material for our deodorant. Right now, we use recycled HDPE for our bottle, virgin LDPE for our housing, and recycled PP for our cap. Because of safety reasons we cannot make the cap in HDPE or LDPE as it would detach small micro plastic pieces, which could break through your skin. Not good for your body. We're also not allowed to make our housing in recycled material due to legislation.

When you're done using our deodorant, detach the cap from the bottle and throw it out. The bottle and housing can be recycled together as they are in the same plastic family (PE). In that way, you provide the best conditions for your local waste management providers to recycle the product again*.
*Always check with your local waste management providers for best practice in your region.

Delivery packaging
All wooden material used in our delivery packaging is FSC certified.

Our wooden material is not recycled as it would diminish the durability of the material, and hence lead to more damaged shipments. Instead, it is 100% recyclable. Just put it in the paper/cardboard bin.

Our customised delivery packaging is as small as it gets. It fits our deo roller perfectly, even if you order a single or double pack.

We've decided to pay a premium for a customised shipping box, as the available standard shipping boxes would simply provide too much waste (think unnecessary pulp and fillings). This reduces our CO2 footprint during shipments.

In addition, a shipping box is durable. This means that the likelihood of it being damaged upon delivery is minimal. A damaged product is a wasted product.

We'll also work closely with our distributors to ensure that we use the most efficient delivery methods to further reduce our CO2 footprint.

Relevant is born out of Denmark. More precisely, in the lovely city of Aarhus.

When we faced the task of selecting our suppliers, we're very cautious about finding partners as close to our headquarters as possible while meeting our criteria for sustainable products.

That's why we're glad that our partners are all located in the European Union. In fact, we collaborate with several Danish partners close to our headquarters.

Having our partners this close to us is great. But the major benefit is our significantly reduced CO2 footprint.

We've committed to the ‘1% for the planet’ organisation.

1% for the planet is a “self-imposed tax”. It means that we voluntarily donate 1% of our annual sales to environmental causes.

We've decided to voluntarily support two important causes:

Ocean Cleanup
We use recycled fishing nets in our product packaging, as it prevents more plastic waste from entering our oceans and landfills.

But this does not change the fact that plenty of fishing nets still float around in our oceans.

We believe that focusing on preventing more plastic from entering the oceans and landfills and cleaning up the plastic already in the oceans is a good way of taking care of our oceans.

Reforestation
We use cardboard, pulp and paper in our delivery packaging. And we make sure that all wooden material is FSC certified.

Even though the FSC certificate ensures we only use sustainable sources for our delivery packaging, we believe that by supporting reforestation projects we help securing forests and planting more trees.

Relevant future

We can always do more for our planet. And we know we are not going to change the world ourselves. But we have tried our very best to make what we believe is a sustainable skincare brand. Over the years to come, we will constantly look into how we can continue to make sustainable choices for our brand.
